Remember the chalkboard, the damp cloth and the teammate who couldn’t subtract 137 from 301 under pressure? Darts tech has quietly changed the game at home. Electronic boards score every throw and connect you to opponents around the world, camera systems now do the same for a real bristle board, and free apps keep your three-dart average to two decimals. This page compares the best darts apps, smart dartboards and wearables for 2026, and is honest about what a smartwatch can and can’t do for a darts player.

Scoring apps

The cheapest upgrade is an app on your phone. DartCounter runs on iOS, Android and the web. The free tier includes 3 online matches a week, 8 game modes and basic statistics; the paid Ultimate tier adds unlimited online games, deeper stats and ranked play. The company says it has more than 1.5 million active players. You type in your scores (or connect a Target Omni camera system), and the app tracks your three-dart average and checkout percentage over time, the two numbers our darts training page suggests you follow.

Smart dartboards (soft tip)

The GRANBOARD 3s is the best-known home electronic board. It connects over Bluetooth to your own iPhone, iPad, Android device or smart TV, which handles the graphics and scoring, and new games arrive through free app updates. Its US dealer lists automatic scoring, an LED ring and online play of 01 and cricket against GRANBOARD players worldwide, with your opponent on screen. A cheaper GRANBOARD dash is $149 at the dealer. The trade-off: these are soft-tip boards, so if you compete in steel-tip, the feel of the throw and the board is different.

  • Good: automatic scoring, online opponents, fun party games, safer soft tips for families.
  • Watch out: needs a phone, tablet or TV with Bluetooth; soft-tip only.
  • Best for: home players, families and soft-tip league players.

Camera auto-scoring for steel tip

Camera systems mount around a normal bristle board and score real steel-tip darts. Target Omni uses four high-definition cameras with bounce-out detection and an LED ring, and connects over Wi-Fi to the DartCounter app. Retailers list the system alone at about $650 in the US; the Omni Ultimate Home Setup on Amazon (about $1,000) adds a Target TOR board, a surround and two sets of 21 g tungsten darts. Scolia Home uses three cameras and a 360-degree light ring, works with a standard steel-tip board and offers online games, tournaments and a practice bot through its browser-based app. Scolia’s own store currently sells only to European customers, so in the US look at the Scolia Home listing on Amazon (about $1,560) or a US darts retailer. Scolia’s FLEX plan includes 1,000 throws a month, with unlimited play on other plans.

  • Good: real steel-tip feel with automatic scoring and stats (Scolia adds heat maps); online play.
  • Watch out: expensive; needs space around the board and a solid wall (Scolia asks for a 76 × 75 cm flat area and a wired connection on its own store); check your board is compatible.
  • Best for: serious steel-tip players who practice daily.

Watches and rings: what they can (and can’t) do

Let’s be straight: we didn’t find a smartwatch that tracks darts throws or scores. What a wearable does well for a darts player is everything around the board: steps and activity on long tournament days, heart rate when the nerves kick in, and above all sleep after late league nights, which research links to dart accuracy (see darts recovery). A few tips:

  • Wear it on the non-throwing wrist or hand. Anything on the throwing arm can change the feel of your release.
  • Oura Ring 5: no screen, sleep and readiness scores, a battery that lasts about 6–9 days, and a $5.99 monthly membership for the full features. Good if you mostly want sleep data.
  • Garmin Forerunner 570: a full GPS watch with HRV Status and Training Readiness included, up to 11 days of battery (47 mm). Worth it if darts is one of several sports, or you run or walk for fitness.
  • WHOOP: a screenless strap focused on strain, sleep and recovery, sold by membership (Peak is $239 a year).

How to choose your darts tech

  • Match your competition. Soft-tip league? A GRANBOARD makes sense. Steel-tip? Keep a bristle board and add an app or a camera system.
  • Start free. A scoring app on your phone gives you averages and online opponents before you spend anything.
  • Check the space. Camera systems and LED rings need room around the board, a solid wall and a good connection.
  • Watch for subscriptions. Apps, camera systems and recovery wearables often have paid tiers; count the yearly cost.
  • Families: soft-tip electronic boards are the safer choice with kids around, but supervision and “nobody in front of the board” still apply (see darts injuries).

Darts apps and smart boards: FAQs

What is the best free darts scoring app?

DartCounter is one of the most popular: free on iOS, Android and the web, with 3 online matches a week, 8 game modes and basic stats on the free tier.

Can I play online darts on a steel-tip board?

Yes, with a camera auto-scoring system like Target Omni or Scolia Home, or by typing your scores into an app like DartCounter.

Is a GRANBOARD good for steel-tip practice?

It’s great for fun, scoring and online play, but it’s a soft-tip board. Steel-tip competitors should do most practice on a bristle board.

Does a smartwatch track darts?

Not throws or scores, as far as we found. Watches and rings help with sleep, activity and heart rate, which still matter on long darts nights.

Do darts camera systems need a subscription?

It depends. Scolia sells a FLEX plan with 1,000 throws a month included and plans with unlimited play; check current terms before you buy any system.
