Running has no single league; it has a web of running organizations, from the world body to your local club. Here’s who’s who, how the World Marathon Majors and Boston qualifying work, and how school, college and trail running fit in, as of the 2026 season.

World Athletics: the international body

World Athletics (formerly the IAAF) was founded in 1912 in Stockholm and has 214 member federations. It governs track and field plus road running from 5K to the marathon, race walking, cross country, and trail and mountain running. It writes the international competition rules, ratifies world records, runs the World Athletics Championships and World Cross Country Championships, and labels elite road races. It also runs the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships; the 2027 edition goes to Cape Town, South Africa, on October 6–10, the first in Africa.

USATF: the US governing body

USA Track & Field (USATF), based in Indianapolis, is the national governing body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking. It has more than 130,000 members and 56 regional associations that look after more than 3,000 local clubs, and it sanctions more than 8,000 events a year. For runners that means:

  • Course certification: USATF measures and certifies road courses, which is what makes a time count for records and qualifying.
  • Sanctioned races come with USATF rules and event insurance.
  • National championships on the road, in cross country and in mountain, ultra and trail (MUT) running, plus selection of Team USA for world championships and the Olympics.
  • Membership for athletes of all ages, from youth programs to masters, with insurance and member benefits.

RRCA and running clubs

The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), founded in 1958, calls itself the oldest and largest national association of running clubs and events. It’s the umbrella for community running in the US: it insures and supports member clubs and races, certifies running coaches and race directors, runs a national championship series, names Runner Friendly Communities, and runs Kids Run the Nation for youth running. Its runner etiquette and safety tips are the basis of our race rules and etiquette page.

A local club is the best way into the sport: group runs at every pace, a track night, a coach, someone to run the long runs with. Look for an RRCA or USATF club near you, or a running store’s weekly group run.

parkrun: free 5Ks every Saturday

parkrun started on October 2, 2004, when 13 runners turned up for a free, timed 5K in Bushy Park, London. It now runs at more than 2,000 locations in 23 countries, including about 100 in the US, where it began in Livonia, Michigan, in 2012. It’s free, weekly, run by volunteers, and open to walkers: register once, bring your barcode and you get a time. Junior parkrun, a 2K for ages 4–14, runs on Sunday mornings in countries that host it.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors

The Majors are the series of the biggest marathons in the world. In calendar order: Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. Sydney became the seventh in 2025. Cape Town passed its final assessment at its May 2026 race and joins as the eighth, and the first in Africa, on May 23, 2027. Shanghai is also a candidate.

Finish the original six (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York) and you earn the Six Star Medal, which hasn’t changed. The series says there’s no Seven Star medal. Instead, a Nine Star medal is planned once the remaining candidates join, no earlier than 2027. Entry to most Majors is by ballot (lottery), charity places, tour operators or qualifying times. Each race sets its own rules, so check its site.

Boston qualifying: how a BQ works

Boston is the Major most runners qualify for. The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) sets a standard for each age and gender group, run on a certified marathon course. For the 2027 Boston Marathon (April 19, 2027), the window opened September 13, 2025, and the standards are:

Age on race dayMenWomen and non-binary
18–342:55:003:25:00
35–393:00:003:30:00
40–443:05:003:35:00
45–493:15:003:45:00
50–543:20:003:50:00
55–593:30:004:00:00
60–643:50:004:20:00
65–694:05:004:35:00
70–744:20:004:50:00
75–794:35:005:05:00
80+4:50:005:20:00

A BQ isn’t a guaranteed entry. When more qualifiers apply than there’s room for, the fastest runners relative to their standard get in first. For 2027 the cut-off was 5 minutes 17 seconds under the standard, and about 8,019 qualifiers were turned away. You must be 18 on race day. The B.A.A. also has an official charity program. Getting to the start line in shape is its own project: our first marathon guide and VO2 max training article are good places to start.

School and college running

High school: NFHS and state associations

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) writes the rules for high school cross country and track, and each state association runs its own season, distances and state meets. Cross country had 241,565 boys and 191,733 girls in 2024–25, which puts it in the top ten sports for both. Races are usually 5,000 meters. More for families on our youth running page.

College: NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA

The NCAA holds men’s and women’s cross country championships in Divisions I, II and III. In Division I, nine regional meets feed the national championships, set for November 21, 2026, in Terre Haute, Indiana. The 2025 DI championships were 10K for men and 6K for women, and teams score with their top five finishers. The NAIA and NJCAA (two-year colleges) have their own national championships, and club running teams give non-varsity students a place to race.

Trail and ultra running

  • USATF Mountain Ultra Trail (MUT) Council: part of USATF’s long-distance running division since 1998. It sanctions US mountain, ultra and trail championships, ratifies records and selects Team USA for world championships.
  • American Trail Running Association (ATRA): the US trail-running association, known for its “Rules on the Run” trail etiquette and race calendar.
  • UTMB World Series: launched in 2022 by the UTMB Group and The IRONMAN Group, with 64 events across five continents in 2026. Finishing series events earns “Running Stones,” lottery entries for the Finals at UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix.
  • Western States 100: the world’s oldest 100-mile trail race, official since 1977, 100.2 miles from Olympic Valley to Auburn, California. Entry is mostly by lottery, with other routes such as qualifying races.

Olympic and elite running

Elite runners are sponsored professionals, not league players. They race on the road, in World Athletics championships and at the Olympics, where the marathon is the classic road event. US Olympic and world championship teams are picked by USATF, usually through trials races. For the rest of us, the Majors’ mass fields mean you can start on the same road as the Olympians, a few minutes behind.

Gear for the chase

Chasing a BQ or a Major is mostly about pacing and fueling. The Garmin Forerunner 570 (about $550) is the watch our best Garmin for runners guide picks for marathon training, with Garmin Coach plans and Training Readiness. Maurten Gel 100 is a race-day favorite in our best energy gels guide: 25 g of carbohydrate per gel, Informed Sport certified according to the maker, about $45 for 12. Practice your fueling on long runs, never for the first time on race day. Prices change often; these are what we saw at the maker or a major retailer in October 2026.

Running organizations questions

What are the World Marathon Majors?

The Abbott World Marathon Majors are Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York City, with Cape Town joining in May 2027. Finishing the original six earns the Six Star Medal.

Does a Boston qualifying time guarantee entry?

No. If more qualifiers apply than there are places, the fastest relative to their standard get in. For 2027, runners needed to be 5:17 under their standard.

What’s the difference between USATF and the RRCA?

USATF is the national governing body: rules, course certification, championships and Team USA. The RRCA is the national association of community running clubs and events: insurance, coach and race director certification, club support and youth programs. Many clubs belong to both.

Is parkrun really free?

Yes. It’s a free, timed 5K every Saturday morning, run by volunteers. Register once online and bring your barcode to get a time. Walkers are welcome.

How far is a college cross country race?

At the 2025 NCAA Division I championships, men raced 10K and women 6K. Regular-season distances vary by meet and division, so check the schedule.
