It’s 6 a.m. before a double session. You check your phone: yellow recovery, HRV down, sleep short after a late flight to the tournament. Do you go hard or dial it back? That one morning decision is what WHOOP sells. In this WHOOP review we look at what the WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG actually measure, what each membership costs in 2026, where it shines for athletes, where it falls short, and which alternatives make more sense for some people.

Prices change often. The prices below are what we saw at the maker or a major retailer in October 2026; check the current price before you buy.

WHOOP review: what you get
WHOOP is a small sensor with no screen, worn on a knit band on the wrist or on the upper arm with a bicep band. You don’t buy it; it comes with a membership. The app turns the data into three daily numbers: Strain (how hard your day and workouts were, on a 21-point scale), Recovery (a percentage built from HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and respiratory rate) and Sleep performance, plus coaching on how much to train and when to go to bed. The 5.0 sensor is 7% smaller than the 4.0 and WHOOP rates the battery at 14+ days; with the Peak and Life bundles you charge it with a wireless battery pack while you keep wearing it. It’s waterproof enough for swimming and showering, according to reviewers.
Where WHOOP shines for athletes
- Worn all the time: no screen, light, two-week battery and on-body charging mean very few gaps in the data, which is what makes HRV and recovery trends useful.
- Upper-arm accuracy: in the5krunner’s long-term test, WHOOP worn on the biceps tracked endurance workouts with a 0.98 correlation to reference devices across 19 sessions.
- Strength training: WHOOP adds a velocity-based model for lifting so a heavy squat session counts as more than a few heartbeats; the same reviewer rates its gym analysis ahead of most rivals.
- Heart rate broadcast: it can send live heart rate to gym machines and bike computers like a standard Bluetooth strap.
- The app: reviewers consistently praise the coaching, journal and Healthspan feature, which estimates a “physiological age” from markers like VO2 max and time in heart rate zones.
Where WHOOP falls short
- You never own it: the band stops recording and syncing if you cancel, so the true cost is the yearly fee for as long as you use it.
- Wrist accuracy in HIIT: worn on the wrist, heart rate got noticeably worse in high-movement sessions in the5krunner’s test. Wear it on the upper arm, or use a chest strap, for intervals and CrossFit.
- No GPS or screen: runners and cyclists still need a watch or phone for pace and distance.
- Readiness is an estimate: there’s no scientific consensus on a single “readiness” number, and sleep stages are imperfect on every wearable. Use it as a guide, not an order.
- Health features: WHOOP’s blood pressure insights are estimates, not a cuff reading, and have drawn questions from the FDA. They are not a medical diagnosis.
The WHOOP plans and the best alternatives
1. WHOOP Peak: best plan for most athletes
Peak (about $239 a year) ships the WHOOP 5.0 with a SuperKnit band and the waterproof wireless PowerPack, and adds Health Monitor, Stress Monitor, Healthspan and sleep/strain coaching to the basics. The PowerPack alone is a real quality-of-life upgrade: you charge while you wear it.
- Good: full coaching; wireless charging pack; Healthspan.
- Watch out: $40 a year more than One.
- Best for: athletes who will actually use the coaching every day.

2. WHOOP One: cheapest way into WHOOP
One (about $199 a year) keeps the core: sleep, strain, recovery, VO2 max and heart rate zones. The Amazon bundle pairs the WHOOP 5.0 with a CoreKnit band and a corded charger instead of the wireless pack. Some sources describe a lower first-year price for One, so check the offer on the day.
- Good: lowest yearly price; all the training metrics.
- Watch out: corded charger means taking it off to charge.
- Best for: trying WHOOP for a season.

3. WHOOP Life: most health features
Life (about $359 a year) ships the WHOOP MG sensor and adds an on-demand ECG (Heart Screener) and daily blood pressure insights on top of everything in Peak. It’s aimed more at long-term health than at training.
- Good: the most data WHOOP offers.
- Watch out: the extras don’t change your training; BP is an estimate.
- Best for: older athletes who want heart-health extras in one place.
4. Polar Loop: best no-fee alternative
A screenless band like WHOOP, bought once for about $200. Polar lists up to 8 days of battery, Nightly Recharge recovery, Sleep Plus Stages and Training Load Pro, with no subscription. Reviewers find its app less polished than WHOOP’s.
- Good: no yearly bill; similar form.
- Watch out: weaker coaching and app.
- Best for: athletes who want the data, not the coach.

5. Amazfit Helio Strap: best budget alternative
About $100 with no subscription. Amazfit lists up to 10 days, 20 g, 5 ATM, HRV and a BioCharge score, wrist or upper-arm wear, 25 recognized strength moves and a HYROX mode.
- Good: half the price of one WHOOP year, forever.
- Watch out: simpler insights.
- Best for: HYROX and gym athletes on a budget.

6. Oura Ring 5: best ring alternative
If you want readiness and sleep without anything on your wrist, the Ring 5 ($399–$499, plus $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year) lasts 6–9 days and is water-resistant to 100 m. In the5krunner’s sleep comparison, Oura did best on REM detection.
- Good: comfortable to sleep in; lower yearly fee than WHOOP.
- Watch out: awkward for lifting and grappling.
- Best for: sleep-focused and endurance athletes.

Is WHOOP worth it? How to decide
- Yes, if you train most days, want a coach in your pocket and will wear it 24/7, especially for CrossFit, HYROX, strength or endurance blocks.
- Maybe not, if you mainly want pace and GPS (get a watch) or hate subscriptions (see our WHOOP alternatives).
- Do the math: three years of Peak is about $717; a one-time band plus a chest strap costs far less.
- Wear it right: for contact sports and hard intervals, the bicep position gives steadier readings than the wrist.

WHOOP questions
How much does WHOOP cost in 2026?
About $199 (One), $239 (Peak) or $359 (Life) a year in the US, with the hardware included. Longer 24-month terms are also offered.
Can I use WHOOP without a subscription?
No. WHOOP has no offline mode; without an active membership the band doesn’t record or sync.
Is WHOOP accurate?
For steady endurance work on the upper arm, independent testing found it very close to reference devices. On the wrist during HIIT or upper-body-heavy work it’s less reliable, like most optical sensors.
Can I swim with WHOOP?
Reviewers describe the 5.0 as waterproof for swimming and showering. Check WHOOP’s current water rating for open-water or deep diving.
WHOOP or Oura?
WHOOP is stronger for training load and strength work; Oura is a ring with a lower yearly fee and a strong sleep focus. Our three-way comparison linked above goes deeper.
