Saturday morning, low tide, knee-high waves rolling in soft and slow. A dad and his twelve-year-old wade out with two foam boards, a couple of college friends are on their third lesson, and a woman in her fifties catches her first green wave and rides it halfway to the sand, laughing the whole way. That’s what the best soft top surfboards do: they float you, forgive you and get you standing sooner. Below are seven real foam boards sold in 2026, from the classic 8-foot first board to a kids’ board and a premium foamie you won’t outgrow, plus how to size one by your weight and the board’s volume.

Prices change often. The prices below are what we saw at the maker or a major retailer in October 2026; check the current price before you buy.

The best soft top surfboards for 2026
1. Wavestorm 8 ft Classic: best overall
Walk past any surf school or beginner beach in the US and you’ll see this board. It’s 8′ x 22.5″ x 3.25″, 86 liters and 11.5 lb, with an EPS foam core, three stringers, a soft deck and a slick HDPE bottom. Fins, an ankle leash and a traction pad come in the box, so you can paddle out the day it arrives. Wavestorm’s listing for the same 8 ft shape gives a recommended weight capacity of 200 lb. For most adults learning to surf, it’s the best surfboard for beginners at its price: lots of float, a forgiving deck and easy to find used once you move on.
- Good: huge volume for the price; everything included; easy to resell.
- Watch out: it’s a learning board, not a turning machine; the included fins and leash are basic.
- Best for: adult beginners, families sharing one board, rental-style beach days.

2. Thurso Surf Spire 8 ft: best alternative 8 ft
Thurso Surf’s Spire (sold in a Billabong collaboration) is the same length as the Wavestorm but thinner. Thurso lists it at 96″ x 22.8″ x 2.5″, 11.4 lb and 65 liters, with an EPS core, a soft IXPE deck, a heat-laminated HDPE slick bottom and three wood stringers. The listing includes a thruster fin set, a double-swivel ankle leash with a triple rail saver, and a textured tail pad, and gives a capacity of 210 lb. Thurso’s own store prices it higher than Amazon did when we looked.
- Good: nicer leash than most boxed boards; thinner rails feel livelier as you improve.
- Watch out: 21 fewer liters than the Wavestorm 8 ft, so heavier beginners get less float.
- Best for: lighter adults and teens who want an 8 ft board that turns a bit more.

3. Wavestorm 7 ft Classic: best for lighter surfers
Not everyone needs (or can carry) 8 feet of foam. The 7 ft Wavestorm is 7′ x 22″ x 3″, 70 liters and 10.2 lb, with a triple-stringer EPS core, a UV-inhibiting soft deck, a high-density slick bottom, a tail pad, a leash and a three-fin set. It fits more easily in a car and under an arm on the walk to the beach, and the shorter length turns more readily once you’re riding along the face.
- Good: lighter and easier to carry; still plenty of float for smaller riders.
- Watch out: Wavestorm’s listing doesn’t state a rider weight; larger adults should start on the 8 ft.
- Best for: teens, smaller adults and second boards for improving surfers.

4. Catch Surf Odysea Log: best size range
The Odysea Log is the foam board you see under good surfers on fun small days, and it’s a great learner too. Catch Surf sells it in six sizes: 6’0″ (57 L), 7’0″ (72 L), 7’6″ (78 L), 8’0″ (86 L), 9’0″ (98 L) and 10’0″ (125 L), so you can match volume to your weight instead of taking whatever comes in one size. It has a dual-composite core with three maple stringers, an HDPE slick bottom with a bumper tail, and fins included. It’s sold through Catch Surf and surf shops rather than as a current Amazon listing, at about $475 on Catch Surf’s site; the 9 and 10 ft sizes were in-store pickup only.
- Good: pick the exact volume you need; stiff, durable build; holds value.
- Watch out: costs more than a boxed board; no leash mentioned in the box.
- Best for: beginners who want one board for years, and heavier or taller learners.

5. Paragon 8’0 Performance Soft-Top: best premium
Paragon builds its foamies differently: a hand-shaped core with epoxy and fiberglass under a soft, wax-free deck. Paragon’s 8’0″ Mint Chip Foamy, which matches this listing’s 8’0″ x 22″ x 3 1/4″ size, is 72 liters with a double concave to vee bottom, and the maker says it was designed for beginners but works up to advanced surfers in bigger waves. The Amazon listing says it suits adults and kids up to 250 lb. Paragon’s return policy on Amazon covers boards that arrive damaged, not change-of-mind returns, so be sure of your size.
- Good: rides more like a real surfboard; no wax; a board you keep after the learning phase.
- Watch out: about twice the price of a Wavestorm; strict returns; fewer liters than other 8 ft foamies.
- Best for: committed beginners and returning surfers who want a soft top with performance.

6. Rock-It Alberto 5’6: best for kids
An 8-foot board is a lot for a nine-year-old to carry down the beach and paddle through whitewater. Rock-It made the Alberto for kids 6 to 12 who’ve done a surf camp and are ready to progress: 66″ x 21″ x 2.8″, 39 liters and 7 lb, with three removable fins and a textured, no-wax soft top. Rock-It says it’s strong enough for teens or adults up to 175 lb, so a parent can share it, and it comes with a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
- Good: light enough for kids to carry themselves; sized for small arms.
- Watch out: no leash listed in the box; too small for an adult’s first board.
- Best for: groms after their first lessons or surf camp.

7. Wavestorm 5’6 Swallow Tail: best budget kids’ board
Wavestorm’s youth-friendly 5’6″ is 21″ wide and 2.75″ thick, 42 liters and listed at 4.8 lb, with a swallow tail, an EPS core with three marine-ply stringers, a soft deck, a high-impact HDPE bottom, a three-fin set and a swivel leash. It’s the cheapest complete board here and light enough for small kids to manage. Stock was low when we looked, so check availability.
- Good: low price; leash and fins included; very light.
- Watch out: no rider weight stated; small boards are harder for true first-timers.
- Best for: kids who already stand up in the whitewater on a bigger board.

How to choose the best soft top surfboard
- Size by volume and your weight, using the maker’s numbers. Volume (liters) is float. Wavestorm rates its 86 L 8 ft board to 200 lb, Thurso gives 210 lb for its 65 L Spire, and Paragon lists its 72 L 8’0″ up to 250 lb. Those are limits, not ideals: if you’re near the top, go bigger. Catch Surf’s staff answers on its Log page point a 5’8″, 155 lb beginner to the 8’0″ (86 L) and a 6’2″, 235 lb surfer to the 9’0″ (98 L).
- When in doubt, go longer and thicker. More foam means easier paddling and more waves caught. Too small a board is the classic beginner mistake; you’ll move down in size as you improve.
- Leash to match the board. Leash length usually matches board length (an 8 ft leash for an 8 ft board). Boxed leashes are basic; many surfers upgrade to something like the FCS All Round Essential (about $52, 7 mm cord for 2 to 8 ft surf, 6 to 9 ft lengths). Check the cord and rail-saver string for nicks.
- Kids: swimming first, then a board they can carry. A child should swim well and be comfortable in waves before surfing. Start on a big foamie with an instructor in the whitewater, then move to a 5 to 6 ft kids’ board.
- Foam is about safety too. Being hit by your own board is the most common cause of surfing injuries, and researchers have suggested foam boards in crowded or dangerous spots. A soft deck doesn’t make you injury-proof, but it’s kinder to you and everyone around you.
- Learn the etiquette before the crowd. Big boards catch waves early, which makes it easy to drop in on someone. Read our surf etiquette guide and start at an uncrowded beach break.

Soft top surfboard questions
What is the best surfboard for beginners?
A big soft top, around 8 ft for most adults, with plenty of volume. The Wavestorm 8 ft Classic (86 L, rated to 200 lb) is the most common choice; heavier or taller beginners can look at a 9 ft board like the Catch Surf Odysea Log 9’0″ (98 L).
What size soft top do I need for my weight?
Use the maker’s rider-weight rating and pick a board well inside it. As examples, Wavestorm rates its 8 ft (86 L) to 200 lb, and Catch Surf’s answers suggest an 8’0″ Log for a 155 lb beginner and a 9’0″ for a 235 lb surfer. If you’re between sizes, choose the bigger board.
Do soft top surfboards need wax?
Most don’t: the textured foam deck gives grip on its own, and makers like Rock-It and Paragon sell theirs as no-wax boards. Some surfers add a little soft-top wax for extra grip as the deck wears.
What size surfboard should a kid get?
For lessons, a big foam board is easiest, since it floats them and catches waves. Once they can stand up and want their own board, a 5’6″ kids’ foamie like the Rock-It Alberto (for ages 6 to 12, 39 L) is light enough to carry and paddle.
How long should a leash be for a soft top?
About the length of the board: 8 ft for an 8 ft foamie, 6 ft for a 5’6″ to 6 ft board. Most boxed soft tops include one sized to the board.
