It usually starts with someone at work saying their team is short a player on Thursdays. A few weeks later you have a team shirt, a nickname, a Marks Per Round average you check more than your bank balance, and an opinion about who should win at Alexandra Palace. Darts leagues are the heart of the sport in the US, and above them sits a ladder of darts associations and tours that runs all the way to the world championships. Here’s who’s who, as of 2026: the PDC and WDF at the top, the American Darts Organization and the National Dart Association at home, local leagues, and the youth organizations.

Who runs darts: the short version
| Organization | What it does | Type |
|---|---|---|
| PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) | The main professional tour and the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace; events run under DRA rules | Steel-tip, pro |
| WDF (World Darts Federation) | The world federation of national darts bodies; world rankings, WDF Cups and the Lakeside World Championships | Steel-tip, amateur and open |
| American Darts Organization (ADO) | The US member of the WDF: sanctioned tournaments, national rankings, nationals and Team USA selection | Steel-tip |
| National Dart Association (NDA) | The sanctioning body for soft-tip electronic darts: league rules, player ratings, Team Dart and the Junior tournament | Soft-tip |
| American Darters Association (ADA) | US leagues and a national championship, including a youth league | Soft-tip and steel-tip |
| Championship Darts Corporation (CDC) | The PDC’s affiliate tour for the US and Canada | Steel-tip, pro pathway |
The PDC: the professional tour
The PDC is where the big names and big money are. 128 players hold a PDC Tour Card, which gets them into the Players Championship events, the UK Open and qualifiers for the European Tour and televised events. Players earn a card through the PDC Order of Merit, the annual Qualifying School (Q-School), the Challenge Tour and the Development Tour. The 2025/26 World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace had a 128-player field, a £5 million prize fund and the first £1 million winner’s prize, won by Luke Littler. The PDC also runs the World Matchplay, the World Grand Prix, the World Cup of Darts and the World Series, which in 2026 included the US Darts Masters at Madison Square Garden in New York.
PDC events are played under the rule book of the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA), an independent body that sets the playing rules, the code of conduct and anti-doping rules. Women compete on the 24-event PDC Women’s Series, whose top eight on the rolling rankings play the Women’s World Matchplay, and the winner of that event qualifies for the Grand Slam of Darts and the World Championship. See the darts rules page for the DRA’s board and oche rules.
The WDF and the ADO
The World Darts Federation is the international federation of national darts bodies, with members from Australia to Yemen and World ParaDarts as an associate member. It keeps world rankings for the Open, Women’s, Youth and Girls’ categories, runs regional cups (the Europe, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Africa and Pacific Cups) and the WDF World Cup, and stages the WDF World Championships at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, England: the 2026 edition runs November 27 to December 6, with 84 players across four titles.
The American Darts Organization, founded in 1975, is the WDF’s US member. It says it averages about 250 member clubs representing roughly 50,000 members. The ADO sanctions tournaments (many of them also WDF-ranked), keeps 52-week rolling and national rankings, runs national championships in 501 and cricket, and picks US teams for WDF events. In 2026 it introduced a new ranking system. To play, you join an ADO-affiliated local association or sign up as an individual member.
Soft-tip: the NDA and the ADA
If you throw at an electronic machine in a bar, you’re probably in a soft-tip league. The National Dart Association is the official sanctioning body for soft-tip electronic darting. It’s an association of the operators who own the machines and run the leagues, with members in eight countries; over 46,000 players are sanctioned each year in leagues at more than 10,000 locations. You join by playing in a league run by an NDA operator member (the US sanction fee is $10, $8 for juniors). The NDA rates players by Points Per Dart and Marks Per Round, certifies referees, and runs Team Dart, which it calls the world’s largest international soft-tip tournament, with more than 10,000 entrants. The next one is April 8–14, 2027, at the Westgate Las Vegas; players must be 18 or older and have played 96 sanctioned league games.
The American Darters Association (ADA) runs leagues and a national championship in both soft-tip and steel-tip, including a nationwide youth league. Many states also have their own soft-tip tournaments run by operator associations.
Local leagues: where most people play
- Soft-tip leagues: run by the local machine operator, usually in bars, restaurants, bowling alleys and game rooms. Ask the venue, or use the NDA’s operator locator.
- Steel-tip leagues: run by local associations, many affiliated with the ADO. Ask at a darts shop or search for your city’s darts association.
- Formats: team leagues with singles, doubles and team games of ’01 and cricket, often handicapped so newer players can win too.
- Ratings: PPD and MPR (soft-tip) or averages (steel-tip) put you in the right division, from beginner to master.
- Age: many league venues serve alcohol; NDA Team Dart requires players to be 18, and youth players have their own leagues. See youth darts.
The pathway to the pros
A North American player who wants to go pro usually climbs through local leagues and ADO or WDF-ranked opens to the Championship Darts Corporation, the PDC’s affiliate tour for the US and Canada. In 2026 the CDC offered US$250,000 in prize money across a 16-event tour, and its best players earned places at the US Darts Masters and the PDC’s North American Darts Championship. Young players aged 16 to 23 can play the PDC’s Development Tour: 24 events a year, with two-year Tour Cards for the top two and World Championship spots for the top three. There’s no NCAA darts and darts is not an Olympic sport, so leagues and opens are the path.
Youth darts organizations
- ADO Youth: youth membership, events and the ADO Youth National Championship, with scholarships. In 2026 it was held at the Witch City Open in Mansfield, Massachusetts, alongside the qualifier for Team USA at the 2027 WDF Youth World Cup.
- NDA Juniors: a national Junior tournament for soft-tip players 20 and under who play in NDA-sanctioned youth or adult leagues.
- WDF Youth: youth and girls’ rankings and world championships; the WDF says its youth tournaments grew 30% in 2025, with 50% more players.
- Junior Darts Corporation (JDC): academies with grading and rankings, working with the PDC and Winmau.
- ADA Youth League: soft-tip and steel-tip youth leagues with age brackets for 12–13, 14–15 and 16–17.
What to bring to your first league night
Your own darts (many venues have house darts, but you’ll improve faster with one set), spare flights and tips, a little cash for dues, and a water bottle. Darts leagues and associations questions
What’s the difference between the PDC and the WDF?
The PDC is a professional tour with 128 Tour Card holders and the Alexandra Palace World Championship. The WDF is the world federation of national darts bodies, running amateur and open events, world rankings and the Lakeside World Championships.
How do I join a darts league?
For soft-tip, ask a bar or game room with electronic boards, or find an NDA operator near you. For steel-tip, contact your local darts association, many of which are ADO affiliates. Most leagues welcome beginners and use handicaps or divisions.
What are PPD and MPR?
Points Per Dart (total points divided by darts thrown) rates ’01 play, and Marks Per Round (marks divided by darts thrown, times three) rates cricket. The NDA uses them to place players in fair divisions.
How do you become a professional darts player?
Win a PDC Tour Card: through the Order of Merit, Q-School, the Challenge Tour, or the Development Tour (ages 16–23). North Americans often build up through the CDC, the PDC’s affiliate tour.
Is there women’s professional darts?
Yes. The PDC Women’s Series has 24 events in 2026 and feeds the Women’s World Matchplay, and the WDF crowns a women’s world champion at Lakeside.
