A rainy Saturday, a soft-tip board on the basement wall, and a 10-year-old who has just figured out that treble 20 is worth 60. By dinner they’re doing subtraction faster than you are. Youth darts is a great sport for kids who like a target, a bit of math and something they can play with grandparents, and it has real youth leagues, national championships and even scholarships. It’s also a sport with sharp points, so it starts with a few safety rules. Here’s darts for kids, for parents: when to start, soft-tip versus steel-tip, safety, youth leagues and the questions parents ask.

When can kids start darts?
There’s no single official starting age, and the youth programs reach quite young: the ADO’s youth rules have set regional play for ages 7 and up, and the ADA’s youth league has brackets from 12–13 through 16–17. More important than age is whether your child can follow the safety rules every time: stay behind the line, never walk to the board while someone is throwing, and hand darts over point-down. For young kids, soft-tip darts on an electronic board are the gentler start. The ADO’s own youth rules carry a blunt warning: darts is an adult sport, and it’s dangerous for children to play without adult supervision.
Soft-tip for beginners
Soft-tip darts have plastic points and, under NDA rules, can weigh no more than 20 grams complete. They’re thrown at an electronic board with a 15.5-inch target that keeps score, which is a big help for kids still learning 501 math, and they’re easier on walls and floors. Electronic boards like the Arachnid Cricket Pro 450 also suggest checkouts in ’01 games, so kids learn the finishes as they play. A simple brass set like the Viper Black Ice soft-tip darts (16 grams) is plenty to start.
Steel-tip on a bristle board is the “real” game you see on TV, and youth events from the ADO, WDF and JDC are steel-tip. Many kids switch once they’re steady and safe. Either way, set the board up right: the bull 5 ft 8 in from the floor, with a throw line 7 ft 9¼ in away for steel-tip or 8 ft for soft-tip. For younger children, some families move the line closer at home; that’s fine for fun, but practice at the official distance before any event. Details are on our darts rules page.
Darts safety for kids
- An adult in the room for young kids, every time.
- Everyone behind the thrower. No one stands beside the board, and no one walks up until all three darts are thrown.
- Throw away damaged tips. A forensic case report described a serious eye injury in a young person and showed that soft-tip darts with damaged plastic points can cause that kind of injury. Plastic doesn’t mean harmless.
- A clear lane and a surround. Put the board where nobody walks past, away from doors, and use a surround such as the Viper Defender III to catch misses.
- Good light, so kids can see what they’re aiming at and where others are standing.
- No lawn darts. The big outdoor kind with heavy metal tips: the CPSC banned their sale in the US in 1988 after deaths and hundreds of emergency-room injuries a year, most in children under 15.
Darts is low-risk for the body otherwise. If your child’s shoulder or elbow aches after a long session, take a few days off and see a pediatrician or sports medicine doctor if it doesn’t settle. Kids also need real sleep: the CDC recommends 9–12 hours for children 6 to 12 and 8–10 for teens, which matters when youth events run late. See darts injuries for more.
Youth leagues and events
Because many league venues are bars, youth darts happens in its own places. The NDA encourages operators to run youth leagues in family fun centers, bowling alleys and fraternal clubs, often on weekend afternoons, with prizes like theme-park trips instead of cash (young players can’t accept cash payouts).
- NDA Junior tournament (soft-tip): for players 20 and under (born on or after May 31, 2007, for the next event) who are sanctioned in a youth or adult league and have played at least 48 league games. The next one is at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, in 2027, with singles, doubles and triples in ’01 and cricket.
- ADO Youth (steel-tip): youth membership and the ADO Youth National Championship. The 2026 event was held at the Witch City Open in Mansfield, Massachusetts, with $8,000 in scholarships across boys’ and girls’ divisions ($1,500 and a paid trip to the 2027 WDF World Masters for first place) and a qualifier for Team USA at the 2027 WDF Youth World Cup.
- ADA Youth League: soft-tip or steel-tip, with an ADA membership and brackets for 12–13, 14–15 and 16–17.
- WDF Youth: under-18 world rankings for boys and girls, and Youth and Girls’ world championships at Lakeside, which grew to 12 and 6 players for 2026.
- Junior Darts Corporation: weekly academies with gradings and rankings, linked with the PDC and Winmau; it’s based in Bristol, England.
For older teens with big ambitions, the PDC’s Development Tour is open to players aged 16 to 23, and its top two each year earn PDC Tour Cards. Luke Littler won the World Championship at 17. See darts leagues and associations.

Parents’ questions about youth darts
Is darts safe for kids?
With supervision and simple rules, yes: everyone behind the thrower, nobody near the board during a throw, damaged tips thrown away. Without supervision it isn’t; even the ADO says darts is dangerous for children to play without an adult.
Should my child start with soft-tip or steel-tip?
Soft-tip is the easier start: plastic tips, lighter darts (20 grams at most under NDA rules) and a board that keeps score. Switch to steel-tip when they’re steady and want to play ADO, WDF or JDC youth events.
Can kids play in darts leagues?
Yes. The NDA, ADA and ADO all have youth programs, and NDA youth leagues often run in family venues. Ask local machine operators or your nearest ADO-affiliated association.
Are there darts scholarships?
Yes, through the ADO Youth National Championship, which awarded $8,000 in scholarships in 2026, with $1,500 for each division winner.
Is darts good for kids’ math?
Many parents find it is: kids add up three darts and subtract from 501 every turn and learn finishes. We haven’t found a study on children and darts math, so take that as a happy side effect, not a promise.
