June 14, 2026: the Carolina Hurricanes shut out Vegas 3-0 in Game 6 and lift the Stanley Cup for the first time in 20 years. A month earlier, the Montréal Victoire won the PWHL’s Walter Cup; in April, Denver won the men’s Frozen Four and Wisconsin the women’s. Behind every one of those trophies sits a ladder of leagues, from mites to major junior, and a few organizations that write the rules. Here’s the map of hockey leagues and associations: who runs what, how the pro, junior, college and high school levels fit together, and where the Olympics come in.

Team counts and formats are as of the 2026-27 season. For the sport as a whole, see our ice hockey hub.

Pro hockey
NHL
The National Hockey League has 32 teams in the US and Canada. Under the collective bargaining agreement that runs from September 16, 2026, to September 15, 2030, the regular season grows to 84 games in 2026-27, the first time since 1993-94, with a shorter preseason of at most four games. Carolina won the 2026 Cup, its second title after 2006.
AHL and ECHL
The American Hockey League is the top development league: 32 teams play 72 games each in 2026-27, from October 2 to April 11, most of them affiliated with an NHL club. New this season: the former Bridgeport Islanders moved to become the Hamilton Hammers. The Toronto Marlies are the defending Calder Cup champions. One step below, the ECHL has 30 teams in 2026-27 and plans to reach 32 by 2027-28.
PWHL
The Professional Women’s Hockey League started in 2024 with six teams and keeps growing fast. For 2026-27 it has 12 teams in two conferences, with four new teams in Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose joining Boston, Minnesota, Montréal, New York, Ottawa, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver. Each team plays 30 regular-season games. Standings use a 3-2-1-0 point system (three points for a regulation win), and body contact is allowed when a player is clearly playing the puck. The Montréal Victoire won the 2026 Walter Cup over Ottawa, 3 games to 1.
Junior hockey
Hockey’s path to college and the pros runs through junior leagues for players roughly 16 to 20.
- Canadian Hockey League (CHL): the three “major junior” leagues, the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League (which includes US teams in the Northwest) and the Quebec Maritimes league (QMJHL), with 61 teams in 2026-27. Their champions meet at the Memorial Cup; the Kitchener Rangers won in 2026. Since August 1, 2025, CHL players can play NCAA Division I hockey as long as they weren’t paid more than actual expenses before college. Division III still treats them as ineligible.
- USHL: the top (Tier I) junior league in the US, with 16 teams in its 2026-27 season, the league’s 25th anniversary season. It includes the U.S. National Team Development Program’s team, Team USA.
- NAHL: USA Hockey’s Tier II junior league, adding a new Mountain Division with teams in Montana, Colorado, Utah and Idaho in 2026-27.
College hockey
NCAA Division I has 64 men’s programs in 2026-27, with Maryville University the newest (a hybrid schedule this year before a full Division I slate in 2027-28). College Hockey Inc. lists 52 Division I women’s teams across five conferences: Atlantic Hockey America, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East, NEWHA and the WCHA. College hockey is a real NHL pipeline: a record 326 NHL draft picks, 30 of them first-rounders, are on college rosters in 2026-27. The 2027 men’s Frozen Four will be at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Beyond Division I there are Division III men’s and women’s programs (no athletic scholarships) and club teams through the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), which give players a way to keep playing in school. College players wear full face protection, and from 2027-28 the NCAA will require cut-resistant neck, wrist and sock protection.
High school hockey
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) writes the high school rulebook, and each state association runs its own season and championship. In 2024-25, 1,682 schools fielded boys’ teams with 32,253 players and 904 schools fielded girls’ teams with 9,589 players, a total of 41,842; 19 states reported boys’ programs and 17 reported girls’. In states without school-sponsored hockey, high school-age players skate in USA Hockey 16U and 18U club leagues instead.
USA Hockey and Hockey Canada
USA Hockey is the national governing body in the US. It registers players, coaches and officials, writes the playing rules for youth, girls’, junior and adult hockey, and picks and trains the national teams that won both Olympic golds in 2026. It counted a record 577,864 registered players in 2024-25, with youth membership at an all-time high of 396,525. Its American Development Model, adopted in 2009, sets age-appropriate practice and game plans for kids. Hockey Canada plays the same role in Canada, with more than 603,000 players registered in 2024-25, its fourth straight year of growth.
Both run safety rules that matter to every family: certified helmets and face masks, mandatory neck guards for young players, and no body checking until 14U in USA Hockey and U15 in Hockey Canada. The details are on our ice hockey rules and youth hockey pages.
International hockey and the Olympics
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) governs the sport worldwide, writes the international rulebook and runs the world championships, including the World Junior Championship (U20). Its rules differ from the NHL’s: a slightly wider rink (60 meters by 26 to 30 meters), a game misconduct on top of the major for fighting, and neck laceration protectors required for every player.
Men’s hockey has been part of the Olympics since 1920 and women’s since 1998. At Milano Cortina 2026, with NHL players back in the tournament, the U.S. men beat Canada 2-1 in overtime on a goal by Jack Hughes for their first gold since 1980; Connor McDavid led all scorers with 13 points and Finland won bronze. The U.S. women also beat Canada 2-1 in overtime, with Megan Keller scoring the winner after Hilary Knight tied the game late in the third period.
