At the end of October 2026, amateur players from across the country head to San Diego with paddle bags and knee sleeves. They’re going to the USA Pickleball National Championships, on the 50 permanent courts at Barnes Tennis Center (October 31 to November 8). Last year’s field ran from age 11 to 87, grandparents and teenagers on the same grounds. Between that park and the pro tours sits a whole web of pickleball leagues and pickleball associations. Here is who runs what, from the rulebook to the TV events, and how a player at any level finds a place to play.

USA Pickleball: the national governing body

USA Pickleball was founded in 1984 as the United States Amateur Pickleball Association and published the sport’s first official rulebook that year. It took its current name in 2020. It’s a nonprofit, and it grew to 104,828 members in 2025. What it does:

  • Writes the rules. The Official Rulebook is updated every year (see our pickleball rules page for the 2026 version).
  • Approves equipment. Paddles and balls used in sanctioned tournaments must be on its approved lists. Its equipment committee approved 790 paddle and ball submissions in 2025.
  • Sanctions tournaments. It sanctioned 144 tournaments in 2025, including 18 “Golden Ticket” events that give a direct path to Nationals.
  • Runs the National Championships. The 2025 Nationals drew more than 2,500 players from 47 states and 20 countries, aged 11 to 87.
  • Grows the game locally. 1,864 volunteer ambassadors in 2025, grants of equipment to schools and parks, and a youth program (more on our youth pickleball page).

The pro game: UPA (PPA Tour and MLP) and the APP

In February 2024 the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball completed a merger under one parent company, the United Pickleball Association (UPA). Both brands kept running. Touring pros sign UPA player contracts.

  • PPA Tour: individual pro events in tiers. Challengers are worth 125–500 ranking points, Opens 1,000, Cups 1,500, Majors 2,000 and the Pickleball World Championships 3,000. Its world ranking blends gender doubles (50%), mixed doubles (35%) and singles (15%) over 52 weeks.
  • Major League Pickleball (MLP): a co-ed team league. Each match is women’s doubles, men’s doubles and two mixed doubles games, with a singles “DreamBreaker” if it’s tied. MLP lists 20 teams for 2026 and a 13-event season from May to August, with the top 12 teams making the playoffs.
  • APP Tour (Association of Pickleball Players): a separate pro tour with 12 stops in 2026, broadcast on CBS Sports and ESPN. It also runs AARP Champions (50+) and AARP Masters (60+) divisions, an “APP Next” circuit for players 23 and under, and a collegiate series.

DUPR: one rating for everyone

Ask a pickleball player their level and you’ll often get a number like “3.8.” That’s usually DUPR, the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It runs from 2.000 to 8.000 and updates from match results, with separate ratings for singles and doubles. New players start as “NR” (not rated), and DUPR suggests 10 to 15 logged matches before you trust the number. Clubs, leagues and tournaments use it to sort players into fair groups. In USA Pickleball events, a doubles team’s skill rating is set by its higher-rated player.

College pickleball

Pickleball isn’t an NCAA sport, so college pickleball runs through club teams and circuits organized by the pro tours. The APP’s Selkirk Collegiate Series ended with the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Cape Coral, Florida (March 6–8, 2026), with $85,000 in prize money. The PPA’s College World Championship is on its calendar for October 30 to November 1, 2026. If you’re a student, check whether your school has a club team or start one through campus recreation.

High school pickleball

There’s no national high school structure yet. Kentucky is out front: the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) approved pickleball as a sanctioned fall sport, starting in 2027-28. In Utah, the Utah High School Pickleball Association runs a club season with varsity and JV levels and state championships, and is working toward official sanction. Elsewhere, look for school clubs and PE units.

Local clubs, parks and senior games

Most pickleball happens close to home: open play at a public park, ladder leagues at a club, round robins at a community or senior center. USA Pickleball’s 2025 report counts more than 82,000 courts at over 18,000 locations in the US. Your city’s parks and recreation department is often the best first call, and USA Pickleball ambassadors organize play in many towns. Older players can also compete in senior games; the USA Pickleball rulebook even refers to the National Senior Games Association’s rules for age events. If you’re new, a beginner clinic is a smart start. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) notes that bad technique leads to injuries.

International pickleball and the Olympics

Pickleball has national federations in many countries. Pickleball Canada, for example, publishes the same official rulebook as USA Pickleball. At the world level, several federations have competed for years. The International Pickleball Federation and the World Pickleball Federation merged in 2025. That group and the Global Pickleball Federation then announced a joint task force to form a single international governing body. One recognized world federation is a basic step toward Olympic recognition. For now, pickleball is not on the program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The PPA Tour also holds events abroad, in places like Australia and Asia.

Equipment you’ll see on the tours

Prices change often. The prices below are what we saw at the maker or a major retailer in October 2026; check the current price before you buy.

Tournament gear has to pass inspection, and the pro tours run their own approval on top of USA Pickleball’s list. Several versions of Franklin’s C45 carbon-fiber paddle are on USA Pickleball’s list; check the exact model you buy (about $230). The JOOLA Ben Johns Hyperion comes from the PPA Tour’s paddle sponsor and is marked USA Pickleball approved (about $120). Franklin also says its X-40 outdoor ball is the official ball of the US Open Pickleball Championships, USA Pickleball and the APP Tour (about $29). Long tournament days are hard on the legs, so many players pack a TriggerPoint GRID foam roller (about $40). Our best foam rollers guide compares more. For the full kit, see our pickleball gear guide and best wearables for pickleball.

Pickleball leagues and associations FAQs

Who governs pickleball in the United States?

USA Pickleball. It writes the official rulebook, approves paddles and balls, sanctions tournaments and runs the National Championships. The pro tours (PPA, MLP and APP) run their own events and rules on top of that.

What is the difference between the PPA Tour and MLP?

The PPA Tour is individual tournaments (singles, doubles and mixed) with ranking points. MLP is a co-ed team league where each match is four doubles games plus a singles tiebreaker if needed. Both belong to the United Pickleball Association.

What DUPR rating is a beginner?

DUPR runs from 2.000 to 8.000, and new players start as “not rated” until they log results. Beginners sit at the low end of the scale. Give it 10 to 15 matches before you trust your number.

How do you qualify for the USA Pickleball National Championships?

Golden Ticket tournaments give a direct path, and USA Pickleball expanded its “Path to Nationals” for 2026. Check usapickleballnationals.com for the current registration tiers.

Is pickleball an Olympic sport?

No. It’s not on the program for Los Angeles 2028. The world federations are working toward one international governing body, an early step toward any Olympic bid.
