Wakeboarding Associations, Pro Tours and Cable Parks

Late July in Boca Raton, Florida: 240 riders, from kids in their first contest to the best pros in the world, take their two passes behind the boat at the national championships while the crowd at the amphitheater cheers every double-up. In early August the world’s riders gather on a lake in central Italy for the IWWF world championships, and in October the cable crowd heads to a park in Georgia for its own worlds. Behind all of it is a small, close-knit network of wakeboarding associations: who runs what, how to start competing, where the pros ride and how the sport works internationally. This page explains them in plain words, as of the 2026 season.

A short history

Wakeboarding is young. USA Water Ski & Wake Sports traces it to the Skurfer, a cross between a water ski and a surfboard built in 1985 by San Diego surfer Tony Finn, and to Herb O’Brien’s Hyperlite, the first compression-molded wakeboard with neutral buoyancy, which made deep-water starts far easier and opened the sport to everyone. Riders formed their own organization, the World Wake Association, in 1989, and it still runs the tours most riders know.

World Wake Association: the tours most riders know

The World Wake Association (WWA) is a rider-formed organization created to grow competitive wake sports, and it says it has sanctioned or produced more than 15,000 events worldwide. For wakeboarders it runs:

  • Nautique Wake Series: the boat wakeboarding tour, with stops through the summer, national championships and a world championship. The 2026 nationals were held in July at Sunset Cove in Boca Raton, Florida, with 240 competitors; Cory Teunissen won the pro men’s title.
  • Wake Park series: cable park events for wakeboarders and wakeskaters. The 2026 Nautique WWA Wake Park World Championships are set for October 8–11 at Valdosta Wake Compound in Valdosta, Georgia, on a full cable, a two-tower “Wakeboard 2.0” system and a skate park, with “Traditional Park” and “Features Only” formats in divisions from young riders to pros.
  • Grassroots events: regional amateur regattas and rider experiences, where most competitors start.

WWA events group riders by sex and age, with youth divisions for riders under 13, amateur divisions for everyone else, and pro divisions (with a WWA pro membership) that pay prize money. Every contestant wears a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and anyone who hits a feature wears a helmet. The WWA also runs the World Series of Wake Surfing, wakeboarding’s sister sport behind the same boats. Judging is explained on our rules page.

USA Water Ski & Wake Sports: the national governing body

USA Water Ski & Wake Sports is the national governing body for towed water sports in the US. It is a member of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation, the Pan American sports organization and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. From its headquarters in Auburndale, Florida, it serves more than 11,000 members and about 600 affiliated clubs. It works through sport divisions; USA Wakeboard is the one for wakeboarders, alongside divisions for three-event water skiing, show skiing, barefoot, racing, kneeboarding, hydrofoiling, adaptive skiing and college water skiing.

IWWF: the world governing body

The International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) was founded in Geneva in 1946, is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has 91 member federations. The International Olympic Committee recognizes it as the authority for all towed water sports. For wakeboarders it governs two disciplines, each with its own world championships and rankings:

  • Boat wakeboard: two passes through the course, any routine the rider chooses, judged on execution, intensity and composition. The 2026 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships were held August 3–8 at Lago del Salto, Italy, with under-14, under-18, 30-and-over, 40-and-over, 50-and-over and open categories for men and women, plus a team title.
  • Cable wakeboard: riders pulled by an overhead cable “very similar to a snow ski lift,” with two passes and features such as ramps, rails, boxes, A-frames and quarter pipes.

Pan Am Games, World Games and the Olympics

Wakeboarding is not an Olympic sport, but it has a place in multi-sport games. Men’s wakeboarding was added to the Pan American Games in 2007 and women’s in 2019, as part of the water ski program. The IWWF was one of the founding sports of the World Games, where wakeboarding has been on the program since 2001.

The cable park scene

Cable parks have made wakeboarding possible for people without a boat. An overhead cable pulls riders around a lake, and parks may have a full-size cable that carries many riders at once and a smaller two-tower system, plus features: kickers, rails, boxes, A-frames and even quarter pipes. Cable riding has its own culture of session passes, wakeskates (boards without bindings) and rail contests.

Every park sets its own rules, so read them before your first lap. In WWA competition, a helmet is required to hit any feature. Water sports helmets are tested to their own standard (CE EN 1385). The Liquid Force Hero (about $80) has a high-density ABS shell, a terry “sweat saver” liner and big vents, and the Pro-Tec Ace Water (about $85) has 15 drain vents and a waterproof EVA liner and meets CE EN 1385.

College and young adults

Wakeboarding isn’t an NCAA sport. In the US, college water sport competition is run by the National Collegiate Water Ski Association, whose team tournaments are built around slalom, trick and jump skiing; our water skiing organizations page covers it. College-age wakeboarders usually keep competing in WWA amateur divisions and IWWF age categories, or ride at a cable park near campus.

How to start competing

  • Ride a grassroots event first. The WWA’s regional amateur events are where most competitors start, grouped by sex and age.
  • Join the national body (USA Water Ski & Wake Sports) if you want to ride its sanctioned events.
  • Learn the judging: judges reward difficulty, variety and clean execution, and a second fall ends the run.
  • Gear check: an approved, locking life jacket for every contest, and a helmet for any cable feature.

See our youth page for how kids get started.

Gear for contest riders

For riders moving past a first board, the Ronix Vault (about $500, 135 cm package) comes with Divide boots and a hybrid three-stage rocker for more pop off the wake. Every rider needs an approved vest such as the Hyperlite Indy (about $70, Coast Guard Level 70), and after a contest weekend, a foam roller such as the TriggerPoint GRID (about $40) is a simple recovery tool (see our foam roller guide).
