You finally held the wave all the way down the lake, and the whole boat cheered. How long were you up? How fast was the boat going? How hard was your heart working while you pumped to stay in the pocket? A good watch answers all three, and the next morning it can tell you whether a whole weekend on the water has caught up with you. This page sorts out the best watches and wearables for wakesurfing: waterproof watches with a real Wakesurf mode, a watch for the person who owns and drives the boat, recovery trackers, and, as an aside, the camera that films the ride.

What a watch actually does behind the boat
- Records the session as wakesurfing. Garmin’s owner’s manuals for the Instinct 3 Solar and fenix 8 list Wakesurf as its own water sports activity, so your rides don’t get lumped in with “other”.
- Splits rides from waiting. Garmin describes an auto run feature for water sports that records each run’s time, distance, top speed and average speed and pauses while you’re not moving. Garmin notes it isn’t available for every water sport type, so check it on your watch’s Wakesurf profile.
- Shows how hard it was. Heart rate shows the real effort of holding a low stance, pumping, and swimming back to your board, so a surf day counts in your training load.
- Tracks recovery. Sleep and heart-rate variability (HRV) trends help you decide whether to ride hard again or take an easy day. More in HRV for athletes.
One thing a watch can’t do: warn you about carbon monoxide. Wakesurfers ride close to the stern of a slow boat, where exhaust gathers, so a headache or dizziness means getting out of the wave and into fresh air, whatever your watch says. Our injuries and safety page explains why.
The best watches and wearables for wakesurfing
1. Garmin Instinct 3 Solar: best wakesurf watch
Garmin’s owner’s manual for the Instinct 3 Solar lists Wakesurf among its water sports activities, next to Surf, SUP and Wakeboard, so the same watch covers the lake and an ocean trip. It’s rated 10 ATM (pressure equal to 100 m depth), charges from the sun as you wear it, and includes Garmin’s recovery tools such as HRV Status and Training Readiness. The rugged case suits boats, docks and trailers. We saw it at about $350.
- Good: a real Wakesurf profile; tough; solar charging; strong value.
- Watch out: no maps; the screen is less vivid than the Instinct 3 AMOLED or fenix 8.
- Best for: riders who want one watch for the lake, the gym and everyday life.

2. Garmin fenix 8: best premium watch
The fenix 8 manual lists the same Wakesurf activity, plus surf, sailing and windsurf profiles, with a bright AMOLED screen, built-in flashlight, maps and a dive rating. It’s the pick if you also ski or hike in winter or want the best screen. About $730 for the 47 mm model.
- Good: the Wakesurf profile plus maps and a big bright screen.
- Watch out: twice the Instinct’s price for features many riders won’t use on the water.
- Best for: all-season athletes who want one premium watch.

3. Garmin quatix 8: best for the boat owner
The person who owns and drives the surf boat has different needs. The quatix 8 is Garmin’s marine watch: with compatible Garmin chartplotters it shows heading, speed and water depth, takes voice commands, controls Fusion stereos, and alerts you to tide changes and anchor drag. It has a 1.4-inch AMOLED screen, titanium bezel and flashlight. About $1,100. One rule for drivers: eyes ahead, not on your wrist, while towing.
- Good: boat integration nobody else offers; premium build.
- Watch out: the boat features need Garmin marine electronics; expensive.
- Best for: boat owners with a Garmin-equipped boat.

4. Apple Watch Ultra 4: best for iPhone users
If you live on an iPhone, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 (from $799 at launch, about $780 on Amazon when we checked) brings Apple’s Tides app with tide times and, in some places, water temperature and wind, plus up to 50 hours of battery (84 in Low Power Mode). We couldn’t confirm a wakesurf-specific workout in Apple’s Workout app, so you’d log the session as a general workout.
- Good: best smartwatch features, calls and messages, cellular.
- Watch out: no dedicated wakesurf profile; shorter battery than Garmin.
- Best for: iPhone users who want one watch for everything.

5. Oura Ring 5 and WHOOP: best recovery trackers
If you’d rather ride with nothing on your wrist, track recovery instead. The Oura Ring 5 (from about $399 plus $5.99 a month) tracks sleep, readiness and HRV, is rated to 100 m and lasts 6 to 9 days per charge. Take it off before you grab the tow rope; rings and ropes don’t mix. WHOOP is a screenless band sold as a membership (about $239 a year for Peak) with Recovery, Strain and Sleep scores. Compare them in WHOOP vs Oura vs Garmin and our best smart rings.

An aside: action cameras
Not a health wearable, but wakesurfing is made for filming: the rider surfs about 10 feet behind the stern (a NIOSH study’s estimate), so the shot from the boat is close and steady, and watching yourself is one of the best ways to fix your stance. The GoPro HERO13 Black (about $429) is waterproof to 33 feet without a housing, shoots 5.3K video, and has slow motion up to 13x for breaking down a carve or a 360. Mount it on the tower or hand it to a passenger. Two rules: the spotter’s only job is watching the rider, so the person filming is never the spotter; and nobody goes onto the swim platform for a better angle while the engine runs.
GoPro HERO13 Black
- Waterproof to 33 ft (10 m)
- 5.3K60 video, up to 13x slow-mo
- About $429
WHOOP
- Recovery, Strain, Sleep scores
- Screenless band
- About $239/year (Peak)
How to choose a watch for wakesurfing
- Look for a real profile. A Wakesurf mode that splits rides from waiting time makes your data useful.
- Water rating: you’ll fall and swim a lot; 10 ATM (100 m) gives margin.
- A secure strap. A watch that comes loose in a fall is at the bottom of the lake.
- Battery for a long weekend without a charger on the boat.
- Recovery tools (sleep, HRV) if you ride several days in a row or compete.
Use the data well: our recovery page explains what to do after big days, training covers balance and the off-season, and boards and ropes are on the gear page. Wakeboarders will find their own picks at best watches for wakeboarding. Browse more watches in GPS watches, or compare a team-sport setup on soccer wearables.
Wakesurfing wearables: FAQs
What is the best watch for wakesurfing?
For most riders, the Garmin Instinct 3 Solar: its manual lists a Wakesurf activity, it’s rated 10 ATM, and it costs about $350. The fenix 8 adds maps and a brighter screen for more money.
Does Garmin have a wakesurf mode?
Yes. The owner’s manuals for the Instinct 3 Solar and fenix 8 list Wakesurf as a water sports activity, alongside Wakeboard, Surf and others. Garmin’s water sport auto run feature can split runs from waiting time, though Garmin says it isn’t available for every water sport type.
Can I wear an Apple Watch for wakesurfing?
Many people do. The Ultra 4 has Apple’s Tides app and long battery life, but we couldn’t confirm a wakesurf workout type, so you’d log sessions as a general workout. Check the water resistance of your model.
Is it safe to wear a ring while wakesurfing?
It’s best to take rings off before you hold the tow rope, smart rings included. Wear your Oura or other ring for sleep and recovery tracking off the water.
How do you film wakesurfing?
Mount a waterproof camera such as the GoPro HERO13 Black on the boat’s tower or hand it to a passenger sitting forward of the stern. Never let the spotter film, and never film from the swim platform while the engine runs.
