Water Polo Leagues and Associations: From Clubs to the Olympics

A December afternoon at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center, 2025: UCLA and USC tied in the NCAA final, one second left, and a shot from Frederico Jucá Carsalade lands for an 11–10 win. Four months later, USC’s women won their own title by one goal over Cal. Behind finals like these sits a whole ladder of water polo leagues and associations: a world federation, a national governing body with clubs in every region, a college conference that stretches across the country, and a high school game that is huge in California and growing elsewhere. Here is who runs what, from Splashball to the Olympics.

World Aquatics: the international federation

World Aquatics (called FINA until 2022) governs water polo worldwide alongside swimming, diving, artistic swimming and open water. It writes the water polo rules used internationally and at the Olympics; the current rules, in force since June 25, 2025, set four 8-minute periods, a 28-second shot clock and a 25-meter field for both men and women. With the IOC it sets the Olympic qualification system, and it runs the World Aquatics Championships and age-group world championships (16U, 18U and 20U). See our water polo rules page for what changed.

USA Water Polo: the national governing body

Founded in 1978, USA Water Polo is the national governing body for the sport in the United States. It runs the US men’s and women’s national teams and the pipeline toward the Olympics, and sanctions most club water polo. It counts more than 50,000 members, more than 500 member clubs and more than 400 sanctioned tournaments a year, plus about 20 national championship events, from the Junior Olympics to Masters nationals. Its programs include:

  • Splashball: the learn-to-play program for ages 5 to 12, run by registered clubs and pools.
  • Club water polo: age-group teams (10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U) that train year-round in many areas and play sanctioned tournaments.
  • Junior Olympics: the summer national championship for age-group clubs, which USA Water Polo calls the world’s largest water polo tournament. In 2025 it was held in Irvine, California, and in north Texas.
  • Olympic Development Program (ODP): launched in 2009, it serves about 3,500 athletes nationwide, introducing them to high-performance training and identifying players for national youth teams.
  • Masters: adult club water polo with its own national championships.

College water polo: NCAA and the CWPA

Men’s NCAA: one National Collegiate championship for Division I and II schools, played in early December. In 2025 the field had eight teams: six conference champions (Big West, MAWPC, MPSF, NWPC, WCC and WWPA) plus two at-large teams. UCLA beat USC 11–10 for its second straight title and 14th overall. Division III men have their own championship, won in 2025 by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Women’s NCAA: the National Collegiate championship has been played in the spring since 2001, and a separate Division III championship started in 2022. USC beat California 10–9 in the 2026 final in San Diego. Stanford, UCLA and USC have won every National Collegiate title since 2001.

The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) is a non-profit conference of four-year colleges with both varsity teams, which compete for NCAA championships, and club teams, which compete for the National Collegiate Club Championships. That makes it the main home of water polo outside the West Coast, from the East to the Midwest and the South, and the club divisions let students keep playing at schools without a varsity team.

Scholarships: under the 2025 House settlement, Division I schools that opted into the new model replaced the old scholarship caps (4.5 for men’s water polo, 8 for women’s) with roster limits of 24 players per team, and may give scholarships to any rostered athlete. Our youth water polo guide covers recruiting.

High school water polo

High school water polo is run by each state’s association under NFHS rules, but only some states sponsor it. In 2024-25, 21,756 boys and 18,023 girls played at about 1,050 schools each, and California accounted for about two-thirds of them (14,641 boys at 602 schools and 11,968 girls at 598). Texas, Illinois and Florida follow, with smaller programs in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Hawaii and Utah. In California, the CIF runs section playoffs and regional championships; boys play in the fall and girls in the winter. If your state doesn’t sponsor it, club water polo through USA Water Polo is the way in.

The Olympics and national teams

Water polo was the first team sport at the Olympics, in 1900; women’s water polo joined at Sydney 2000. The US women won three straight Olympic golds (2012, 2016, 2020). At Paris 2024, Serbia beat Croatia 13–11 for the men’s gold, the US men won bronze in a shootout against Hungary, and Spain beat Australia 11–9 for its first women’s gold. Los Angeles 2028 brings the Games home: water polo will be played at the Long Beach Aquatics Center, and for the first time the women’s tournament will have 12 teams, the same as the men’s.

Pro and adult water polo

Top Americans often play club water polo in Europe between international events: USA Water Polo counted 13 national team athletes, men and women, starting the 2025-26 season with clubs in Italy, Greece and Spain. At home, adults keep playing on college club teams, in adult club leagues and in Masters water polo through USA Water Polo.

Gear for the season ahead

Whatever level you play, two things go in every bag: a ball to practice with and a mouthguard. The KAP7 HydroGrip (green/yellow) is a size 4 ball KAP7 sells as NFHS and USA Water Polo approved, for about $45 on Amazon in October 2026; the KAP7 HydroGrip size 5, which KAP7 calls the official NCAA men’s game ball, is the men’s size (about $40). The Shock Doctor Gel Max (about $12) comes in youth and adult sizes. For long tournament weekends, the OOFOS OOahh Slide from our recovery shoes guide is easy on tired feet.
