Thanksgiving week in Tulsa: the turkey waits while thousands of riders, from balance-bike toddlers to Olympians, fill the SageNet Center at Expo Square for the USA BMX Grand Nationals. A few months earlier, the world’s best racers flew down an eight-meter start ramp at the world championships in Brisbane, and freestyle riders threw down at the X Games in Sacramento. BMX has a lot of organizations for one small bike. Here is who runs what, from your local track to the Olympics.

UCI: BMX worldwide

The UCI writes the rules for international BMX racing (Part 6 of its regulations) and freestyle. In racing, it runs the UCI BMX Racing World Cup (the 2026 season opened on June 6–7 in Sarrians, France) and the UCI BMX Racing World Championships, held in Brisbane, Australia, in July 2026. The first official BMX world championships took place in 1982 in Dayton, Ohio. World championships include Championship categories (Juniors 17–18, Under 23 and Elite) and Challenge and Masters categories for amateurs, so age-group racers can race a “worlds” too. Riders must be at least 5 to race a UCI-sanctioned BMX event.

In freestyle, the UCI runs the BMX Freestyle World Cup (2026 opened May 13–17 in Montpellier, France, with park and flatland) and the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, the world championships for BMX freestyle park and flatland plus trials, with 2026 freestyle park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The first flatland world championships were held in Chengdu, China, in 2019, and riders must be at least 15 for international flatland events.

Olympic BMX: racing and freestyle

BMX racing joined the Olympics at Beijing 2008. BMX freestyle park followed at Tokyo 2020, the first judged cycling discipline in Olympic history, according to the UCI. At Los Angeles 2028, both return for men and women at a dedicated venue in the Valley area: BMX racing on July 15–16 and freestyle park on July 28–29, 2028, according to NBC Olympics. Riders qualify through the UCI’s Olympic qualification system. Flatland, street and dirt are not Olympic events.

USA Cycling: national teams and championships

USA Cycling is the national governing body for BMX racing and freestyle in the US, alongside road, track, mountain bike and other disciplines. In 2026, the Elite BMX Racing National Championships were held March 27 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where Kamren Larsen and Payton Ridenour won the elite titles. The BMX Freestyle National Championships were held March 27–28 at COR BMX Park in South Jordan, Utah, where former world champions Justin Dowell and Hannah Roberts won the elite titles.

College BMX

BMX isn’t an NCAA sport, but college riders race in USA Cycling’s collegiate program. The 2026 Collegiate BMX National Championships ran March 20–22 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe, Louisiana, alongside the USA BMX Cajun Nationals. Marian University won the team omnium; Breanna Winter (Marian) and Robert Connelly (Lindsey Wilson University) won the individual titles. Some colleges have varsity cycling programs that include BMX; ask the coach about the team and any scholarships.

USA BMX: local tracks to the Grand Nationals

USA BMX is the sanctioning body almost every American racer joins. It formed in 2011, when the two long-time rivals, the American Bicycle Association (ABA) and the National Bicycle League (NBL), merged; its headquarters are in Tulsa, Oklahoma. USA BMX and BMX Canada list more than 300 tracks in the US, Canada and Curaçao. A membership gives you a serial number that tracks your points everywhere you race, and US members get a secondary sports accident insurance benefit.

  • Local races: single-point races, plus double- and triple-point events, earn district points at any sanctioned track. Charity races like Race for Life benefit Blood Cancer United.
  • State and provincial championship series: multi-point races ending in a State Final.
  • Gold Cup: regional triple-point races leading to Gold Cup Finals.
  • The national series: national events across the country, starting in Las Vegas in January in 2026, with balance-bike classes on Friday and Saturday of nationals.
  • Race of Champions (ROC) and the Grand Nationals, “The Greatest Race on Earth,” which closes the national season with double national points. In 2026 the Grands run November 25–29 at Expo Square in Tulsa; Visit Tulsa counts more than 3,600 athletes from all 50 states and 25 countries.
  • Pro racing: the USA BMX Pro Series and the pro championship at the Grands, for riders born in 2007 or earlier under the 2026 rules, plus Vet Pro for riders 30 and over.

USA BMX also runs a Stacyc World Championship series for electric balance bikes. It has a zero-tolerance policy on doping and works with USADA, and a concussion policy that requires a written release from a health care professional before a rider returns.

X Games and pro freestyle

The X Games are freestyle BMX’s best-known stage. X Games Sacramento (June 26–28, 2026, at Cal Expo) had men’s BMX park, street and dirt, women’s BMX park, the Dave Mirra BMX Park Best Trick and BMX Dirt Best Trick. It was the first stop of the new X Games League, where clubs of athletes earn points through the summer season, followed by X Games New Orleans in July. Pro freestyle also lives in video parts, brand teams and invitationals, and many riders also enter UCI events on the road to the Olympics.

Your local track and park

Find a track on the USA BMX website, sign up for a one-day trial and go on a practice night; many tracks have loaner bikes and helmets, and USA BMX says beginners usually start as Novices. For freestyle, look for public skateparks that allow bikes, pump tracks and local BMX shops, which often know about jams and sessions. Kids’ programs, ages and gear rules are on our youth BMX page; racing rules on the BMX rules page; and what to bring on race day on BMX race day and session day.

Prices change often. The prices below are what we saw on Amazon in October 2026; check the current price before you buy.

Ready to race? A beginner race bike like the Mongoose Title Pro (aluminum frame, sized for riders about 5’3″ to 5’8″) gets you on the gate; for the park, the Mongoose Legion L20 freestyle bike (about $280) has a chromoly 3-piece crank and 2.3-inch tires. On long race days, many riders bring an electrolyte mix like Skratch Labs Sport Hydration, which the maker says is NSF Certified for Sport.
