A Saturday “best trick” contest at the local skate shop, with a cardboard sign-up sheet and a pizza for the winner. A packed arena in São Paulo for the Street League Super Crown. The X Games ramp under summer lights. An Olympic final with the whole world watching. Skateboarding grew up outside organized sport, and its competitions still feel different: there’s no single league, no draft-day pipeline from high school to the pros. Here’s who runs what in skateboarding associations, leagues and competitions, and how a skater gets from the local park to the biggest stages, as of the 2026 season.

World Skate: the international federation

World Skate, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, is the international federation for skateboarding and roller sports, and the one the International Olympic Committee works with. It writes the competition rules and judging criteria for street and park, runs the World Skateboarding Tour (World Cups and world championships) and keeps the World Skateboarding Ranking that decides who goes to the Olympics. Skaters compete in its events through a national federation recognized by World Skate, or by wild card. World Skate’s minimum age for its events is 12 in 2026, rising to 13 in 2027 and 14 from 2028.

In the US: the USOPC and USA Skateboarding

USA Skateboarding was recognized as the sport’s national governing body in 2018. After a US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) review found it fell short of the required standards, it voluntarily gave up that certification on March 16, 2023. Since then the USOPC itself manages the Olympic high-performance program for skateboarding, which it lists as an “internally managed sport.” In practice, US skaters reach the Olympic team through World Skate events and the World Skateboarding Ranking.

Skateboarding at the Olympics

Skateboarding debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Games and returned at Paris 2024. At Los Angeles 2028 there are four events: men’s and women’s park and street. Each event has 22 skaters, 88 in all. Most places go by name from the World Skateboarding Ranking, with at most three skaters per country per event; the US, as host, is guaranteed a place in each event if no American has qualified, and one universality place per event helps smaller nations.

  • Qualification window: June 11, 2026, to June 11, 2028.
  • Phase 1 runs on the World Skateboarding Tour (World Cups and world championships) until March 31, 2028; a skater’s ranking comes from their best results over an 18-month period.
  • Phase 2 is a final qualifier series in 2028 for the top 44 skaters per event in the ranking.
  • Age: skaters must be born on or before December 31, 2014.

Vert is not on the Olympic program.

Street League Skateboarding (SLS)

Founded in 2010 by pro skater Rob Dyrdek, SLS bills itself as the premier street skateboarding competition. From 2018 it served as World Skate’s official street world tour through the Tokyo qualifying period. The 2026 SLS Championship Tour has seven stops: Sydney (February 14–15), Los Angeles (April 4), Rio de Janeiro (August 9), Tempe, Arizona (August 29), Paris (October 3), Tokyo (November 14) and the Super Crown World Championship in São Paulo on December 12–13. 2026 also brings the first SLS Nations Cup, with Brazil, the USA, Japan and a Rest of the World team.

The X Games and the X Games League

The X Games have been action sports’ best-known stage for three decades, and the summer edition is still the main home of vert, alongside park, street and best-trick contests. Salt Lake City hosted for the first time in June 2025. In summer 2026 the X Games launched the X Games League, a team-based league for skateboarding and BMX: clubs of 10 drafted athletes (five men and five women) earn points for individual results across a three-stop season ending in a championship. Winter clubs for snowboarding and skiing are planned from 2027.

Local contests, shops and the path up

Skateboarding has no high school league under the NFHS and is not an NCAA sport, so the path is different from team sports. Most skaters start at a local skatepark, enter shop contests and regional series, get “flow” (free product) and then sponsorship from a skate shop or brand, and build a name with video parts and social media. Contest results feed into national selection and the World Skateboarding Ranking. Plenty of colleges have skate clubs for fun and community.

Parks themselves are part of the system. The Skatepark Project, the nonprofit Tony Hawk founded in 2002, helps underserved communities build safe public skateparks, with grants of up to $25,000. Our youth skateboarding guide covers lessons, camps and first contests for kids.

Your first skateboarding contest

Local contests are the friendliest way in. Most are run by skate shops, parks and recreation departments or regional series, with divisions by age and ability, so a beginner isn’t up against the local ripper. A few tips:

  • Read the format before the day: run length, number of runs, whether there’s a best-trick jam. Our rules page explains the common ones.
  • Check the gear rules. Many contests require a helmet, at least for kids and in bowls, and some parks require pads too.
  • Use practice time to learn the course and plan a run made of tricks you land most of the time. Consistency and flow score.
  • Bring water and snacks. Contest days are long and often hot.
  • If you hit your head, you’re done for the day. See a healthcare provider before skating again.

Gear that goes from the park to the contest

Contest skaters ride the same gear you can buy, from brands with decades in skateboarding. The Powell Peralta Skull & Sword complete is a pro-shape board: 8.0″ by 31.45″, 14″ wheelbase, Mini Logo trucks and bearings and 53 mm wheels (about $117 on Amazon in October 2026). For contests where helmets are required, the Pro-Tec Classic Certified is certified, the maker says, to the CPSC bike standard, ASTM F1447 and ASTM F1492 (about $63). After a long contest day, many skaters reach for a small massage gun such as the Theragun Mini (about $220); see our massage gun guide.

Skateboarding leagues and associations FAQs

What is the governing body for skateboarding?

World Skate worldwide, including for the Olympics. In the US, the USOPC has managed the Olympic program directly since USA Skateboarding gave up its national governing body certification in March 2023.

How do skaters qualify for the 2028 Olympics?

Through the World Skateboarding Ranking. Points come from World Skateboarding Tour events from June 2026, then a final qualifier series in 2028. Each of the four events has 22 places, with at most three per country.

What is Street League Skateboarding?

A professional street skateboarding series founded in 2010. In 2026 it visits seven cities and ends with the Super Crown World Championship in São Paulo on December 12–13.

Is vert skateboarding still competed?

Yes, mainly at the X Games, which hold vert and vert best-trick contests, and in the X Games League. It is not an Olympic event.

Can you skateboard in college?

Not as an NCAA sport. Many colleges have skate clubs, and skaters keep competing in open contests and World Skate events while in school.
