A college sophomore races her first NCAA championship in Tempe, in a pack of riders at 25 miles an hour. A 45-year-old checks the IRONMAN website at midnight to see if he got a slot for Kona. A Paralympian in the PTWC class trains for Venice Beach in 2028. They’re all triathletes, but in different organizations, with different rules and calendars. This guide to triathlon organizations sorts it out: World Triathlon, USA Triathlon, IRONMAN and 70.3, the pro T100 tour, college triathlon (including NCAA women’s triathlon), and the Olympic and Paralympic pathway. Dates and numbers are as of 2026.

| Organization | Who it’s for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| World Triathlon | National federations worldwide | International rules, World Championship Series, Olympic and Paralympic triathlon |
| USA Triathlon | US athletes of every age and level | Rules, race sanctioning, membership, clubs, coaches, nationals, Team USA |
| IRONMAN | Adults 18+ and pros | IRONMAN and 70.3 races, Kona and 70.3 World Championships, Pro Series |
| PTO / T100 | Professional triathletes | T100 Triathlon World Tour (2 km, 80 km, 18 km) |
| NCAA and club college triathlon | College athletes | Varsity women’s triathlon; club teams for everyone |
World Triathlon: the international federation
World Triathlon was founded as the International Triathlon Union (ITU) on April 1, 1989, at a congress in Avignon, France, and is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It has more than 170 affiliated national federations and governs triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, cross triathlon, winter triathlon, long distance triathlon and the mixed relay, for elites, age-groupers and para athletes. Its rules are the model for national rulebooks; USA Triathlon’s race formats and distances “mirror those defined by World Triathlon.”
For elites, World Triathlon runs the World Triathlon Championship Series over the standard and sprint distances, plus World Cups and continental cups. Age-groupers can race World Championships too, by qualifying through their national federation. World Triathlon also sets the minimum age for each world championship distance: 16 for the sprint, 18 for the standard distance and longer.
A new tour for 2027. World Triathlon and the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) have announced a combined Triathlon World Tour: the World Championship Series becomes the T50 World Championship Tour (Olympic-distance racing, nine events in 2027 including Los Angeles and a final in Hamburg), alongside the T100 World Championship Tour. World Triathlon’s president says the aim is for every event to include amateur races as well as a pro field.
USA Triathlon
USA Triathlon, founded in 1982, is the national governing body for triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike, winter triathlon, off-road triathlon and paratriathlon in the US. It calls itself the largest multisport organization in the world: it sanctions more than 3,500 events and races and supports more than 300,000 active members a year. It writes the Multisport Competition Rules, certifies coaches and officials, supports clubs, and picks Team USA.
Racing in a USAT-sanctioned event needs a membership or a one-race “Bronze” license. In 2026 an annual Silver membership costs $69.99, and a one-race license $14.99 for a sprint, $24.99 for an Olympic distance and $34.99 for long course. Youth memberships ($10 digital, $30 premier) run until a child’s 18th birthday, and young adults 18–23 pay $40. USAT’s 2026 national championships included Collegiate Club Nationals in Gulfport, Mississippi (March), the Multisport National Championships Festival in South Haven, Michigan (May), Long Course Nationals in East Freetown, Massachusetts (June), Youth and Junior Nationals in West Chester, Ohio (July 31 to August 2), and USA Triathlon Nationals over sprint and Olympic distances in Milwaukee (August 7–9), with Paratriathlon Nationals on August 9. Age-groupers can qualify there for Age Group Team USA.
For most people the best way in is a local triathlon club: group swims, rides and runs, a coach, and people to share a lane with at 6 a.m. USAT keeps a club finder. Masters swim clubs (see swimming organizations) and group rides (see cycling organizations) fill the gaps.
IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3
IRONMAN started on February 18, 1978, when 15 people took on Judy and John Collins’s challenge on Oahu: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles!” The race moved to Kona on the Big Island in 1981, and the first races outside Hawai’i came in 1985. The IRONMAN 70.3 series (half the distance: 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run) launched in 2005, with its first world championship in Clearwater, Florida, a year later. Today IRONMAN lists more than 170 triathlons worldwide. You must be 18 to enter its full and 70.3 races.
IRONMAN races are private, branded events with their own competition rules, close to USAT’s (both use a 12-meter draft zone for age-groupers). After several years of split men’s and women’s championships, the IRONMAN World Championship returns to a single race day in Kailua-Kona, with men and women racing together, on October 10, 2026, the first single-day race since 2019. The IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship was in Nice, France, in September 2026, and Nice hosts again in 2028. Age-groupers earn world championship slots at qualifying races. Pros race the IRONMAN Pro Series, which ran from March to October in 2026.
Going long takes more than willpower. Long-course racing is a long day of heat, fueling and pacing; see triathlon race day and triathlon nutrition, and keep your electrolytes simple. Nuun Sport tablets (300 mg sodium each, Informed Choice certified) are a light option many athletes carry; our electrolyte powder guide compares more.

T100 and the PTO
The Professional Triathletes Organisation runs the T100 Triathlon World Tour, a pro series over 100 km: a 2 km swim, 80 km bike and 18 km run. In 2026 it has nine events, with women and men racing four standalone events each: Gold Coast, Singapore, Spain, San Francisco, Vancouver, the French Riviera, Dubai and Saudi Arabia, before both meet at the final in Qatar on December 11–12. T100 weekends also put on races for amateurs. From 2027 the T100 becomes the T100 World Championship Tour inside the new Triathlon World Tour with World Triathlon.
College triathlon: NCAA women’s triathlon and clubs
NCAA women’s triathlon became an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women in 2014. In 2025–26, 42 schools sponsored it, including 14 in Division II, and in fall 2026 Conference Carolinas becomes the first NCAA conference to sponsor it, with seven schools. Races are draft-legal sprints (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run), up to five athletes per team score, and Division I programs may offer up to 6.5 equivalency scholarships (Division II up to 5.0). The 2025 champions were Arizona (Division I), Lenoir-Rhyne (Division II) and North Central (Division III), and the 2026 national championship is November 8 in Tempe, Arizona.
Club triathlon is for everyone else, men and women. USA Triathlon’s 2026 Collegiate Club National Championships in Gulfport, Mississippi brought together more than 1,000 athletes from more than 100 clubs, racing a draft-legal sprint, an Olympic distance and a mixed relay. Queens University of Charlotte won its fifth straight title.
Youth and junior pathway
Kids start at USAT youth races (ages 6–15), Splash & Dash events and IRONKIDS fun runs. Teens who want to race fast move into the Junior National Series: Youth Draft-Legal for 13–15 and Junior Draft-Legal for 16–19, leading to Youth and Junior Nationals, junior world championships and, for a few, college and elite racing. Our youth triathlon page explains the distances and what parents need to know.
Olympics and Paralympics
Triathlon made its Olympic debut at Sydney 2000 with men’s and women’s individual races over the standard distance (1.5 km, 40 km, 10 km), and the mixed relay joined at Tokyo 2020. At LA28 the triathlons are at Venice Beach: the women’s race on July 15, 2028 will award the first medals of the Games, the men’s race follows on July 16 and the mixed relay is on July 20. In the relay, teams go women–men–women–men, each swimming a 350 m lap from the beach, riding two 3.3 km laps and running two 800 m laps. A World Triathlon T50 test event is planned at Venice in July 2027.
Para triathlon joined the Paralympics at Rio 2016 with six medal events, growing to eight at Tokyo and 11 at Paris. At LA28 (Venice Beach, August 18–19, 2028) there will be 12, with every class represented for both men and women for the first time: PTWC (wheelchair users), PTVI (visually impaired, racing with a guide) and PTS2 to PTS5 (standing athletes, by level of impairment). The Paralympic race is a sprint: 750 m, 20 km and 5 km. In the US, USA Triathlon runs paratriathlon nationals and the pathway to Team USA.

Triathlon organizations questions
Do I need a USA Triathlon membership to race?
For USAT-sanctioned races, yes: either an annual membership or a one-race Bronze license (in 2026, from $14.99 for a sprint), often added during registration or bought at packet pickup. Check each race’s registration page, since non-sanctioned and some branded races handle insurance their own way.
What’s the difference between IRONMAN and USA Triathlon?
USA Triathlon is the national governing body: it writes the rules, sanctions thousands of races and selects Team USA. IRONMAN is a company that owns and runs IRONMAN and 70.3 races worldwide, with its own rulebook and world championships.
Is triathlon an NCAA sport?
Women’s triathlon is an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women, with 42 schools in 2025–26 and a national championship each November. Men race at the club level through USA Triathlon’s collegiate clubs.
How do you qualify for Kona?
Age-groupers earn slots at IRONMAN qualifying races through IRONMAN’s age-group qualification system, and the number of slots varies by race. Check the race’s slot allocation page before you sign up.
When did triathlon become an Olympic sport?
At Sydney 2000. The mixed relay was added at Tokyo 2020, and para triathlon joined the Paralympics at Rio 2016.
